What Is Metabolic Autophagy
Metabolic Autophagy is a COMPREHENSIVE, and SIMPLE GUIDE to eating a diet that balances longevity and performance.
There are 2 parts in the title that needs to be clarified:
- ‘Metabolism’ means ‘change’, and it describes the collection of all the life-sustaining chemical reactions inside the organism
- ’Autophagy’, translates from Greek into ’self-devouring’ or ’eating of self’
In 2016, a Japanese researcher Dr. Yoshinori Ohsumi was rewarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for “discoveries of the mechanisms for autophagy.”
Autophagy is a metabolic process during which cells disassemble and remove their dysfunctional components. You’re basically recycling cellular debris and taking out the trash.
There are many BENEFITS TO AUTOPHAGY, such as reduced inflammation, improved immunity, prevention of genotoxic stress, ANTI-AGING, suppression of cancerous tumor cells, and elimination of pathogens.
Compromised autophagy pathways will lower the body’s ability to eliminate and heal the organism from inflammation, accumulation of toxins, and parasitic infections.
Not enough autophagy can also accelerate aging and promote disease in the body! Therefore, it should be central to any diet that tries to promote longevity.
One of the few known ways of actually extending lifespan in most species is caloric restriction. However, autophagy plays a key role in gaining the life-extension benefits of life extension.
In one study on mice and flies, they found out that if you inhibited autophagy but still fed the animals fewer calories, they didn’t live longer, but the ones who were proficient at causing autophagy did.
This is a very important point – it means just going on a weight loss diet while not allowing autophagy to do its work will actually be bad for your longevity and health. Long-term caloric restriction leads to micronutrient deficiencies and more oxidative stress.
That’s why you have to know how to activate autophagy without simply starving yourself…
Autophagy is regulated by the fuel sensors of mTOR and AMPK, which will then decide whether to promote catabolism or anabolism.
The way you do that is with INTERMITTENT FASTING– following strategic periods of not eating and time-restricted feeding.

The Dark Side of Autophagy

It’s true that if you’re DOING IT WRONG, then you can have a bad time. If you don’t strategically structure your refeeds and fasting periods, then you may end up losing muscle and damaging your longevity.

- The traditional “BULKING and CUTTING” module actually makes it MORE DIFFICULT to lose fat after consecutive cycles because fat cells can’t disappear
- Micronutrient deficiencies and HORMONAL ISSUES prevent you from burning fat and building muscle
But there are others…
There’s a HEALTHY ALTERNATIVE
There are some who have the audacity to QUESTION THE STATUS QUO and try something unconventional.
That’s what I did and I’ve never been healthier or fitter ever before.
Intermittent fasting is only a single piece of the puzzle to activating autophagy. There are several other ways of doing it, which have a similar effect on improving your health and lifespan.
Combining periods of fasting with a cyclical ketogenic diet can increase the positive effects of autophagy while avoiding the negative side-effects.That’s what I’ve been doing for over 7 years.
After adopting the principles of Metabolic Autophagy, I’ve not only built purely lean muscle but have also improved my biomarkers, such as lower blood sugar, inflammation, and cholesterol.
In fact…elevated levels of insulin and blood sugar are linked to decreased lifespan in other species, such as fruit flies, nematodes, and mice.
If glucose and insulin levels remain low, the body will eventually shift into a state of ketosis, which restructures your metabolism to getting its main energy from fat and ketones, as opposed to carbohydrates.
But ketosis can be achieved by simply eating low carb for a certain time period as well. Keto is a FASTING MIMICKING DIET, characterized by lower circulating blood glucose and elevated ketone body production.
Fasting ketosis – induced by fasting – and nutritional ketosis – achieved through eating – are physiologically the same – almost identical. There are some specific adaptations unique to a fasted state – like autophagy – which is why you would want to combine them.
The key is to do FASTING INTERMITTENTLY and adding KETO into the mix will make it that much easier. In fact, the ketogenic diet mimicks the physiology of fasting to a great degree. The two are a MATCH MADE IN HEAVEN.
I would not speak so loudly and enthusiastically about this if it didn’t work. My personal life and energy levels have improved tremendously and I want other people to feel the same way.
