Hypnosis is a person’s condition that includes focused attention, decreased peripheral awareness and increased ability to respond to suggestion.

There are competing theories that explain hypnosis and related phenomena.

Theories of an altered state see hypnosis as an altered state of mind or trance, marked by a level of awareness different from the ordinary state of consciousness.

Non-state theories, on the other hand, see hypnosis as, in many ways, a type of placebo effect, a redefinition of interaction with a therapist, or a form of an imaginary role-playing act.
